STIRR intervention is designed to help clients with severe mental illness and co-occurring disorders access services of preventive care for blood-borne infections.
The acronym STIRR stands for Screening for HIV and HCV risk factors, Testing for HIV and hepatitis, Immunization against hepatitis A and B, Risk reduction counselling, and medical treatment Referral and support.
Psychiatric Services, September 2010 issue, has published results of the research recently completed in United States by Dr Rosenberg et al. The research found STIRR to be "efficacious in providing a basic, best-practice package of interventions for clients with co-occurring disorders".
The abstract of the study is available on Psychiatric services website at http://ps.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/abstract/61/9/885; full text is available for a fee.
Medscape Today has talked to Dr Rosenberg and gives further insight into this topic at http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/727998.
