The management of people with a co-existing mental health and substance use disorder service delivery guidelines

Guidelines developed to provide a clear direction for health services to better meet the needs of people with co-existing disorders. They are described as guidelines that can be used as a blueprint for services to design, develop and deliver comprehensive health care for people with co-existing disorders. Strategies include the need to build partnerships, improve workforce training and provide a range of interventions aimed towards positive health outcomes. The Guidelines are accompanied by the Discussion Paper ‘The management of people with a co-existing mental health and substance use disorder'. This paper provides a review of the current literature and a background to the issues related to the care and treatment of people with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. It documents the need to improve the health and health outcomes of people with comorbid disorders and provides a rationale for the development of the Service Delivery Guidelines. Both documents complement each other and have been informed by the scientific literature.
