New findings indicate that a short question and answer session about a person's family history of depression, anxiety and substance abuse can predict interviewee's risk for developing each disorder, as well as how severe it is likely to be.
The Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study funded by the New Zealand Health Research Council, US National Institutes of Mental Health, UK Medical Research Council and the William T Grant Foundation (USA) was conducted by an international group of researchers on 1000 New Zealanders born at Queen Mary Hospital in Dunedin in 1972-73.
They found that person's psychiatric family history, like the family history of cancer, diabetes or heart disease is equally as important to collect. Read more about the conclusions and implications of this study.
