Alerting the Community to the Link between Illicit Drugs and Mental Illness
Developmental Research
Qualitative and Quantitative Research Report
Prepared for Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing in May 2007.

This research was commissioned by the Australian Government to inform a communication campaign to alert the community of the links between illicit drugs and mental illness. Information from the 2004 National Drug Strategy Household Survey about the widespread prevalence of comorbidity was the precursor to the information campaign that sought to raise awareness of the connections between illicit drug use and the development of mental health problems; as well as emphasising the importance of seeking treatment and/or intervention for mental health problems, illicit drug use or initiative both, as early as possible.
The ‘Alerting the Community to the Links Between Illicit Drugs and Mental Illness' was an initiative to improve services for people with a mental illness.
